Strong start for the FDA 16 year old in the Toyota Racing Series
Maranello – Marcus Armstrong’s 2017 season started off with him standing on the top step of the podium. Just a few weeks on from the announcement that he has been taken on by the Ferrari Driver Academy, the 16 year old New Zealander made his debut in the Toyota Racing Series. The championship runs over five rounds, ending on 12 February. It was a memorable debut, given that it ended in his first win and all the more special because the circuit is just a few kilometres from his home town of Christchurch.
“It’s incredible,” commented Armstrong. “I never even thought I might win my first race in my home town! But it wasn’t down to luck, because we worked very hard at it and I have to say I had a fantastic feeling from the car. I’m made up about the win, but I’m well aware that the entry in this year’s championship is at a high level. So I will have to fight hard.”
After winning the first race of the opening weekend, Armstrong came home second in Race 2. However, the third and final leg in Christchurch did not go so well. After the first of the five rounds, he is currently fifth overall on 135 points, with Verschoor leading on 181.
