The two Ferrari Driver Academy drivers were front runners in the eagerly awaited Italian round of the GP3 Series
Giuliano Alesi and Callum Ilott ended a busy weekend of GP3 action at Monza with a second and third place respectively. The free practice session had to be cancelled because of heavy rain on Friday morning, which meant that all the drivers were not as well prepared as usual come qualifying time. Alesi and Ilott found themselves together on the third round of the grid for Race 1, in which the British driver came home third and the Frenchman sixth.
The second and final race of the weekend saw Alesi perform well right from the start. The 18 year old Frenchman swapped the lead several times with eventual winner Pedro Piquet. Ilot came home behind Alesi, having fought his way up the order to overtake series leader Anthony Hubert with a nice move at the Roggia chicane. Unfortunately, after the race, Ilot and team-mate Hubert were excluded from the result as the left rear tyre pressure was lower than the permitted minimum, according to the technical regulations.
Nevertheless, Ilott is still second overall in the championship, in which Alesi is currently sixth equal with two rounds remaining.
