The GP3 Series got underway this weekend at the same race meeting as the Spanish Formula 1 Grand Prix. In the first of two races at the Catalunya circuit, Callum Ilott finished third to stand on the Spanish podium on his debut in this category.
Having started from fourth, the 19 year old British driver, a Ferrari Driver Academy student, managed to move up to third. It was immediately clear he had a great race pace and he then took second place, but excessive tyre degradations meant he had to slow down in the closing stages to manage to bring it home in third place.
Giuliano Alesi ran a very fast and aggressive race, having had to fight his way up from 12thplace on the grid. The Frenchman pulled off a series of passing moves which meant he took the chequered flag in seventh spot.
